Winemaking has existed in this northeastern corner of Italy, bound by the Alps, Slovenia, and the Adriatic Sea, since ancient times. A renaissance started in the 1970s that catapulted this region to worldwide fame, thanks to Pinot Grigio. The region is home to many of Italy's very finest white wines; production there is about 80% white to this day. From classic, crisp Pinot Grigio, to structured and age-worthy Chardonay, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Vitovska. Red wines include Merlot, Pinot Nero, Refosco, Schioppetino, Teran, and Terrano. From the Carso to Collio, the breadth of indigenous and international grapes, and its influence from Slovenia, all make this one of Italy's most exciting and dynamic regions for wine.
