Portugal’s Not-So-Hidden Gems

Portugal is a gem of a country and worth visiting for its amazing beaches, seafood, trailing rivers, and historic wine regions. And if “Portuguese winemaking” necessarily transports you to the rich, fortified wines of Oporto and Madeira, well, we have a handful of non-fortified wines from this transformative region that are perfect for the peak of summer. It’s impossible to discuss refreshing Portuguese wine without mentioning Vinho Verde, which comes from the north of the country. Many styles of this wine are spritzy, most are white, and a few of them are serious, cerebral wines that break with tradition (Aphros is an apt example). Due north of the capital city of Lisbon is the region known as the Ribatejo, but this mouthful of a region now goes by an abbreviated form: Tejo. One standout winery from this part of Portugal is Casa Cadaval, which has been in the hands of the Alvares Pereira de Melo family since 1648. The winery is a paradise of viticulture, Lusitano horses, olive groves, grains, and produce. Try their Trincadeira for its bold red style and smooth, tannic nature, or the white Padre Pedro Branco for its aromas of tropical fruits. We’ve barely scratched the surface, of course, when it comes to Portugal’s riches, but these are a few highlights. See our list of selections for even more Portuguese wines that fit summer’s bill.
