California Dreaming: The Old and New Guards

Joni Mitchell waxed poetic about it. The Mamas and the Papas set their songwriting sights on it. Hasn’t California always been the land of hopes and dreams? These days, California is a blending of cultures, of the old guard and the new guard. Established wineries long ago laid the groundwork in Napa and Sonoma and they’re still worth getting exciting over, but a crop of new and unknown producers are on their way up, and they’re producing wines of extraordinary complexity and texture. Here’s what we’re excited about right now: the wines of El Dorado County (Bebame), Santa Cruz (Birichino), Monterey (P’tit Paysan), Lake County (Zepaltas), and Berkeley (Donkey and Goat). But we’re not giving up on California classics like Au Bon Climat from the inestimable Jim Clendenen, which is easy on the palate and a mainstay at Astor Wines & Spirits. Come speak to our staff and we’ll find a wine to your liking, whether it’s bold Cabernet you’re clamoring over or the latest Gamay. There’s still plenty of dreaming to do, and California is rich with possibility. Oh, California, we’re coming home.
