Pinot Noir "St. Georges' Cuvée," Birichino - 2018

Item # 28471 750mL

This warm Pinot Noir comes from the cool Santa Cruz Mountain Range, 14 miles southwest of Monterey Bay. A balanced and natural red with elegance and charm that can soothe the most savage beast, this wine is versatile with a wide arrays of foods. Try with braised poultry, pork, mushrooms, and pasta. From vines grown in poor, low-yielding soils, this wine is whole-cluster fermented and matured in neutral oak.

Staff Pick Notes

One of the more exciting projects to come out of California is Birichino (pronounced biri-kino). Owners and winemakers Alex Krause and John Locke are alumni of Bonny Doon, having been educated in the importance of finding expression and balance in California terroir. Their pursuit of a wine seductive in both its perfume and palate is achieved with the St. Georges' Cuvée Pinot Noir. A truly enticing red, with violet, raspberry, and cherry aromas, the palate is pleasantly fruit-forward with cool acidity and well-integrated tannins. This is cooler-climate Pinot, from the picturesque Santa Cruz Mountains, just 14 miles away from Monterey Bay. I love this wine on its own for pleasure and would pair it as well with roasted or grilled turkey, root vegetables, or pork chops. Cheers!

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.
