Chiroubles "Vin de Kav," Vionnet - 2020

Item # 29674 1.5L

"Vin de Kav" means "fresh from the cellar." Deliciously fruit-forward and easy on the palate. Natural Gamay like this is so versatile with many foods: try gamey sausages, roast poultry, and rare beef. Renée Karim Vionnet represents a continuation of honest Beaujolais winemaking practices first promoted by the Gang of Four: working with nature for the benefit of the vines, minimalist intervention, with little filtering. With his roots in baking and as a Morgon native, after having studied under Guy Breton, he went off on his own in 2006 to command 3.7 hectares in Villie-Morgon. The plots are located in Quincié, Beaujeu and Lantignié and are composed of marl, shale and sand, and planted with vines ranging in age between 2-55 years.

Staff Pick Notes

Lapierre, Thevenet, Foillard, and Breton are the Beaujolais winemakers known as the “Gang of Four.” They revitalized the reputation of Beaujolais as a place that produces serious and elegant wines by using a hands off approach and letting the land speak for itself. These notorious banditos have blazed a trail for other producers like Vionnet to make gorgeous Beaujolais in less hallowed Cru villages like Chiroubles. “Vin de Kav” means fresh from the cellar which is an apt name for this wine. The bouquet is a myriad of fresh flowers and fruits but predominantly violets. The palate again focuses on freshness, ripe fruit with lively acidity. Bottles like these turn wine sceptics into true believers.

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....

Beaujolais

Beaujolais is the classic expression of the Gamay grape. These red wines (labeled simply “Beaujolais”) are approachable, grapey, and fun – ideal for low-pressure sipping. Beaujolais-Villages is a step up. Compared to basic Beaujolais, the rules for Beaujolais-Villages wines are more strict. Villages wine is produced in far smaller quantities. Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
