Irancy "Palotte" J-P et Stéphanie Colinot - 2012

Item # 31621 750mL

Irancy is a small Burgundian appellation located in north central France. It is very near Chablis and shares the same Kimmeridgian soils. Colinot is a small, 12 ha family property where there's a particular variety of Pinot Noir that's richer in anthocyanins than the one from the Côte d'Or. The fruit is hand-harvested and partially de-stemmed before fermentation.

Staff Pick Notes

Irancy is an idiosyncratic appellation in Burgundy; it lies right below Chablis but the wines made here are all red. It's also really the only place in the world where the ancient grape César is grown in any significant amount. Therefore we don't have a typical red Burgundy in our hands, yet it's a great success in the hands of Colinot. It presents aromas of black cherry, blackberry, grilled herbs, rose, black plum, licorice, and a hint of tar. On the palate you'll find red fruits, some fresh stems, and floral character. However, this is not a silky-smooth Pinot like what you might encounter in the Côte d'Or. But it definitely has the lift and gracefulness of a Burgundian red in conjunction with an earthiness and mineral backbone like what you might find in a Syrah from the Rhône. Pair with grilled salmon or a big charcuterie board.

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....
