So much of our experience with wine comes down to expectations. I confess to being skeptical about a wine from Slovakia despite the fact that this is an Egon Muller project. I should've known better. Egon Muller isn't just German wine royalty, he's obviously some kind of Riesling whisperer. This wine was shockingly good. It has a generous dose of ripe pear and apricot but the racy acidity keeps it light on its feet. A little smoky minerality on the end is reminiscent of the Mosel, Muller's home turf. It's a gem of a wine, perfectly balance, harmonious. Slovakia, who knew?
