Nero Màccari, Gulfi - 2015

In Sicily there is Nero d'Avola, and then there is Nero d'Avola from Pachino, an area in the southernmost tip of the island that many consider the grape's spiritual home. This is where Gulfi estate has cultivated their "contrada" wines--four single vineyards with distinct personalities reflecting the diverse soil types.The Maccari vineyard is 3 ha of 30-year-old vines at 30 meters on mostly calcerous clay. The climate is distinctly hot, not surprising given it's south of Tunisia. All of this makes for a spectacular wine. Maccari shows off the grape's masculine side with a well developed structure of lithe tannins and lifted acidity. Medium bodied but shows dense layers of black cherry, blackberry, plum, clove, forest floor & tobacco. Drinking beautifully now.
