Tasting Notes

Made from sweet potatoes, this is one of the most intensely flavored shochus on the market. Enjoy the long finish on this powerhouse on the rocks, please.

Staff Pick Notes

Drink like the Japanese in-crowd
Shochu, a distilled spirit made from a variety of grains and starches, has become the drink of choice among Japanese hipsters and cognoscenti. In fact, in Japan, shochu outsells sake by more than five to one to the under thirty crowd. Of all the types of shochus, those made from sweet potatoes (imu) stand out as rich and complex. Blend in some fermented rice beverage and a certain elegance and various flavors emerge. This example of imu shochu presents an aroma of raw almonds and honeysuckle, followed by flavors of saffron and white peppercorns. Pour some over ice, add a dash of Junmai sake, strain and garnish with a Thai basil sprig. Drink up, make another, sip slowly and take a flight of fancy to a swanky after-hours club in Tokyo. Who knew that international travel could be so affordable?
