Estate Red Peloponessos, Dom. Mercouri - 2019

Item # 17657 750mL

The Mercouri Estate has been operating since the late 1800s and imported the first Refosco vines from Italy's Friuli region during that time. While Refosco dominates the blend there is also 15% of the iconic red Greek grape, Mavrodaphne. After hand-harvesting and fermenting the grapes, the wine ages for a year in French oak casks.

Staff Pick Notes

I love this wine! Don't let its French style label fool you; it's GREEK! Made from 85% Refosco (a grape indigenous to Friuli that was brought to Domaine Mercouri in 1870) and Mavrodaphne (a native Greek variety known for its port-like dessert wines). It's dry and full-bodied with deep, dark berry fruit which is spicy with herbal notes. With moderate tannins, a silky texture, and a long finish, this is a great wine to enjoy alone or with food.

Glossary

Refosco

Refosco is actually the name of a group of red grape varieties - but as they produce wines that are nearly indistinguishable, the word "Refosco" is often used as if it were a single grape. Refoscos are medium- to full-bodied wines that are most often fruity, accessible and dry; on rare occasions, however, they can be still, off-dry, non-dessert reds.
