PGI Cyclades Assyrtiko Monemvasia, Dom. Sigalas - 2020

Item # 22311 750mL

This is a delightful marriage of two grapes that are indigenous to Santorini: the Assyrtiko variety, intense, earthy, and clearly expressing the volcanic island soil; and the more aromatic Monemvasia, As is the custom on Santorini, the vines are trained in basket shapes to protect the fruit from the intense wind. It's an elegant way of extracting great fruit from a wild landscape, and when you taste this wine, you'll be very glad they figured it out. Try with shrimp in herb sauce.

Staff Pick Notes

I know that the wines of Greece aren't first or even very high on many people's wish lists. I was one of you! I only drank Greek wines whilst on vacation. This wine was served in Tavernas straight from demijohns. It was fine, fitted the occasion – and that's where it ended. This wine from Domaine Sigalas made from Assyrtiko and Athiri grapes has put a Greek wine right at the top of my white wine drinking list because it is delicious! A clean and crisp gem of a wine with a nose of earthy minerals, volcanic ash, and slightly smoky aromatic quince/pear fruit. The palate is definitely mineral-forward with a backbone of stewed peppery fruits that is simply wonderful. This complex & refreshing wine would of course match Greek mixed meze. Also think about roast chicken and pork dishes! Cheers, Stephen W.

Glossary

Assyrtiko

Pronounced "a SEER tee ko". This white varietal is native to Santorini and the other Aegean Islands. Used to make crisp dry wines similar in style to dry Riesling, it is often blended with other varietals - both indigenous and international - such as Sauvignon Blanc. This grape is also used to make the popular Greek dessert wine, Vinsanto.
