Sancerre Chavignol "Monts Damnés", Thomas Labaille - 2022

Item # 23114 750mL

Classic, mineral Chavignol from one of the commune's best and steepest vineyards. This wine is rich, fat, round, and full of layered aromas, a subtle nose, and a long finish. Not a typical bistro Sancerre, but a graceful wine meant for aging and pleasure.

Staff Pick Notes

Now this is good wine. It’s damnée good wine. Because Les Monts Damnées is Sancerre’s top vineyard site. Its 45 degree south facing slope with well drained marl soils make Sancerres grown here the most sought after. The Labailles farm their plot of 30 year old vines sustainably. The wine shows viscosity in the glass which translates to a slick, weighty mouthfeel. Aromas of crushed apples, straw, and beeswax. The dense texture adds to the rich flavors of pears and spice on the palate. It finishes satisfyingly long. Perfect side by side with a Crottin Chavignol (the resident goat cheese).

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...
