Fendant "La Mourzière", Cave Caloz - 2021

Item # 25942 750mL

Funky cheese, you have met your match. The Swiss Chasselas, locally known as Fendant in the French speaking canton of Valais is locally consumed in the mountains over pots of fondue and trays of raclette. Lightly spritzy, chalky, as well dusted with yellow pollen on the nose, one finds a smattering of Swiss meadow herbs on the tart palate that makes one think of open fresh air.

Staff Pick Notes

Delicious! A rich, dry, harmonious wine with plenty of zip and vivid flavors of yellow fruits, white flowers, pollen, fresh-cut hay, and soft ginger spice. I put this Fendant, as Chasselas is called in Valais, to the test at a fondue party recently, and it was a big hit. Though striking on its own, its waxy, spritzy quality and fresh-spring-day-on-a-mountainside aromas complement all sorts of cheeses, especially when they're all mixed up together, hot, and gooey. La Mourziere is a particularly steep slope in Les Coteaux de Sierre in the northwestern quadrant of Valais, which sees minimal precipitation, plenty of sunny days and cool nights. Conrad Caloz is a founding member of Vitival, the governing body of the viticultural movement "Production Intégrée" which promotes sustainable, environmentally responsible farming.

Glossary

Chasselas

A white grape grown all over the world, including Alsace, the Loire, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Italy. The best Chasselas wines, however, are produced in Switzerland, where the grape is called Fendant and is the most widely planted variety in the country. When made well, Chasselas is soft, welcoming and easy to drink.
