Terrasses du Larzac, La Réserve d'O - 2016

Item # 29422 750mL

Part of a renaissance of quality wines from this region north of Hérault. Limestone terraces create shingles to the Hérault and Lergue Rivers, and this is a high-altitude wine and a great example of the new Terrasses du Larzac appellation. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsaut, this natural and lovely wine boasts a bracing backbone enveloped by ripe, berried fruit. A blend of blackberry and peppercorns with a pure, ripe personality. Serve cool with roasted meats like lamb, herbed vegetables, and slow stews of garlic and beans.

Staff Pick Notes

Terrasses du Larzac is an appellation at the northern edge of the Coteaux du Languedoc. As all Languedoc regions there is exceptional value, it's almost too easy to stumble onto extraordinary wine. Reds blends are thick with the lushness that conjures up the south of France. Sandy, stone rich soils are ideal for vineyards to create a low yielding, concentrated grapes that excellent reds are made from. This particular Grenache dominant blend has seductive aromas of candied fruits, figs, dried lavender. On the palette an explosion of fresh picked blackberries, strawberries, with anise and rosemary. It's just steeped in lush red fruits and garrigue. It's pleasant almost immediately after opening, but letting this sit out a few hours before the meal is only going to highlight its joyful nuances.

About the Producer

Aboras, l’Hérault Languedoc - Rousillion Marie and Frederic Chauffray used to run a wine shop, but after studying agronomics, Marie became interested in growing grapes to make her very own wine. In 2004, she discovered a unique, original vineyard situated at 400 meters altitude, overlooking the Vallée de l’Hérault within the appellation Terrasses du Larzac. She was ecstatic. With her husband,...

The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
