Ch. Clos Floridene Blanc, Graves - 2020

Item # 31084 750mL

The estate is owned by the renowned oenologist Denis Dubourdieu, who hugely influenced the rise of white wines in Bordeaux. The use of 15% new oak gives this Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon blend a nice sweet spice note as well as a round, richer texture. The wine also offers refreshing and zesty characteristics that work well at the table.

Staff Pick Notes

Dry, oaked white Bordeaux IS available here in the US. And Ch. Clos Floridene Blanc is a delicious example of the category. Beautifully aromatic with honeysuckle and grapefruit on the nose. Born of the characteristically chalky soils of Graves, the palate is rich, silky, nutty and soft. With the judicious use of Sémillon I might not have thought this to be a Sauvignon Blanc as it brings to mind a lightly oaked Chablis. Lovely. This is one of the rare white wines in this price range that benefit from cellaring. Enjoy with seafood or white meat. Or sip it on its own.

Glossary

Flor

Flor is a protective layer of naturally occurring yeast that grows, under certain circumstances, in the barrels after fortification. Its presence (or absence) is what determines the style of a given Sherry. When it does grow, it protects the wine from oxidation while feasting on the available glycerin - the resultant Sherries are thus dry and very pale in color (called Finos or Manzanillas). Sometimes the layer forms early on, but then falls into the wine and disintegrates - these Sherries thus...

Sauvignon Blanc

Few varietals have spawned as bizarre a list of descriptors as Sauvignon Blanc. Believe it or not, “cat pee” is in fact a complimentary tasting note, associated with some of the best bottlings. (It’s a somewhat odd way of pointing out herbaceousness in the wine.) Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...

Bordeaux

Situated on the mid-Atlantic coast of France around the Gironde river, Bordeaux is home to some of the most legendary wines on earth. There are (for all intents and purposes) five grape varieties permitted under French wine law for red Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and, very infrequently, Petit Verdot and Malbec. For white Bordeaux, only three varieties are permitted: Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillion, and Muscadelle. The exact percentages of each grape variety used in any...
