Terre Siciliane Rosso, Bonavita - 2019

Item # 32111 750mL

Faro is an Italian region in Sicily located at the extreme northeastern corner of Sicily that's located just a stones throw from Calabria. Bonavita is a family-run estate. This is a full-bodied red wine that is complex and can age marvelously. The wines of Faro are always red and made from the principal grapes of the area, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Capuccio. These are some of the same grapes you find on Mount Etna however Faro is on the mainland of Sicily and the two Nerello grapes are native to the mainland, not Etna.

Staff Pick Notes

The estate of Bonavita is a tiny, family-run winery situated on the steep hills of Faro Superiore overlooking the strait of Messina with the Calabrian coast in the distance. The DOC of Faro (meaning "lighthouse") is one of Italy's smallest, producing fruit at 250-300 meters. The Bonavita Faro 2017 is a blend of Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Nocera that was grown organically without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. After a 20-day maceration on the skins, the wine ages for 24 months in a mixture of used tonneaux and barrique. Rustic and earthy, this wine offers notes of bramble, wild berries, forest floor, and dried cranberries. A deceptively "pretty" wine, the 2017 Faro offers length and persistence as well as finesse.
