Yes, it's supposed to be cloudy. Pétulant naturel is Birichino's California answer as to how to produce delicious, lightly sparkling wine (a Pét-Nat or Pétillant Naturel). Birichino was established by Alex Krause and John Locke, two Bonny Doon veterans, who have ventured on their own and seek out old vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation and beyond.

If you personify classy, iconic Champagne as Marilyn Monroe, then pétillant-natural is Carrie Brownstein from Portlandia. While quirky and not known worldwide, pét-nat is sexy in its own right. Made in the "méthode ancestrale" and bottled live under crown caps, pét-nats offer a different experience with every bottle. The Malvasia Bianco by Birichino looks cloudy because it is unfined and unfiltered, but it's clean on the palate with a fine mousse--not quite as frothy as a Champagne. The Malvasia grape offers floral springtime aromas and makes for a lovely, fruitier alternative to Crémant or Cava. Get on your pét-nat game before it becomes mainstream.
