Staff Pick Notes

Everything about this Muscadet seems pretty routine until you learn that it has been aged on the lees for 7 years. Lees aging is really common in Muscadet, but not for multiple years. So we have all kinds of ages here: 60-year-old vines, 7 years of lees aging, and 11 years or so since the grapes were grown. All that leads to something, to my taste, much closer to classic, crisp, clean Muscadet than a lot of the new style terroir-driven Muscadet wines around these days. Lees aging, in this case, preserves a lot of freshness, while adding a textural element and a more savory palate overall. It's an absolute delight with seafood, but will be at home at the table regardless of what food is served, from salad to steak.

Glossary

Melon de Bourgogne

Muscadet

The coolest (temperature-wise) of the Loire Valley appellations, this region is most famous for its bracingly dry, seafood-friendly whites. Made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape (virtually unheard of in the rest of the world), these refreshing wines are idyllic partners for oysters or mussels.

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.
