Staff Pick Notes

Gordo, Yecla

There is a lot of family history represented in this label from Patrick Mata. "Gordo" is an affectionate nickname for his father, Jose Mata. The design is reminiscent of the family's labels from the 1800's, the Mata family has been making wine all over Spain for nearly four generations. This particular beauty is crafted by Patrick and his brother Alberto through Compania de Vinos del Atlantico. A blend of 70% Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. These two grapes make an excellent pair of full body and dark fruit. Both considered high tannin varieties, the structure does not disappoint while smoke and berries linger on the palate. A great food wine, grilled pork tenderloin and smoked meats. A few sips of this and I had to have pulled pork tacos!

Today, Cabernet Sauvignon has a...
