Staff Pick Notes

Here you are. A bottle that's full of legend, history, and natural goodness. You can call Marcel Lapierre the godfather of natural wine. He's been farming organically and vinifying with minimal intervention since 1973. His idea was to make Beaujolais wine as they did a century ago, before the advent of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and store bought yeasts. Although he passed in 2010, his kids, Camille and Mathieu have kept his approach to wine. My latest taste of this Morgon was opened 10 years after its vintage. It was so impressive that its structure was still intact with mouthwatering acidity and dusty tannins playing on the palate. Aromas of braised cherries, dried herbs, and tea leaves were still vibrant. A touch of bitterness appeared on the finish. This bottle will show you that well crafted natural wine is worth the wait.

Beaujolais-Villages is a step up. Compared to basic Beaujolais, the rules for Beaujolais-Villages wines are more strict. Villages wine is produced in far smaller quantities. Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
