Milan Nestarec, "Forks and Knives" White - 2020

Item # 35565 750mL

We're thrilled by the multitude of natural wines coming out of the Czech Republic. Natural winemaker, Milan Nestarec, has made this fun, delicious white from a blend of local grapes. This an orange wine, it's color coming from extended skin contact. Bone dry, with notes of cider, meyer lemon, bay leaves and a hint of green olive. Be aware this may have a slight fizz when first opened. The wine is bottled without fining or filtering and zero sulfur is added.

Staff Pick Notes

Milan Nestarec makes wonderful wines in the Czech Republic, running the gamut from "everyday regular normal wine" to the extremist of the extreme, like the 100% skin-contact Pinot Gris that in its initial vintage came out so deeply colored that fellow winemakers assumed it was Blaufrankisch. It earned its cheeky name of Podfuck from the Czech word podfuk, meaning cheat or hoax. Somewhere in the middle is the Forks and Knives line. These wines are meant for the table, for every day and every meal, yet they're still classic Milan: challenging your perception of what "everyday wine" means. The white, made from a blend of aromatic grapes, is cloudy, lightly effervescent and comes across almost more like cider than wine with vibrant acidity and notes of apple, lemon myrtle, and peach candy.

Riesling

Though the trend is now in the other direction, for many years Riesling was known for producing wines with little alcohol and some residual sugar - too sweet for many modern wine drinkers. Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...

(It’s a somewhat odd way of pointing out herbaceousness in the wine.) Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...
