Bourgueil "Merci la Vie," Dom. de l'Oubliée - 2019

Item # 36598 750mL

Xavier Courant was a Parisian retailer turned natural vigneron. He has around 6 hectares of mostly Cabernet Franc vines in Bourgueil. His "Merci la Vie" wines come from soils that are sandy and gravel-based. The fruit was destemmed before pressing and then fermented and aged in concrete vats. The cuvée name is taken from the films of French film director and write Bertrand Blier.

Staff Pick Notes

Here's another absolutely delicious, versatile and juicy wine from the small appellation of Bourgeuil France in the Loire. It's named after the main character from the 1991 coming-of-age French film by Bertrand Blier. The nose brings fig leaf, earth, green olive, violets, raspberries, and black cherries. The palate is medium-bodied and very balanced with good tannic structure, crisp acidity, and flavors of tart cranberries, cherries, and exceptional minerality from the mix of soils (80% sand and gravel, 20% clay and limestone). Definitely a wine to be shared among friends! Pair it with a variety of foods from burgers and tomato-based dishes to smoky BBQ and richer fish dishes.

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. Cabernet Franc has remained close to its roots in France, enjoying small pockets of popularity primarily in the Loire Valley (specifically in Chinon), where it is often bottled as a varietal wine, and in Bordeaux where it is still used in moderate percentages in the typical blends. In fact,...
