Sauvignon Blanc "Praesulis", Markus Prackwieser Gump - 2021

Item # 36637 750mL

This is no ordinary Sauvignon Blanc but comes from an extraordinary producer from the Isarco Valley of the Germanic region of Italy known as the Südtirol, or Alto-Adige. The Gump winery (Gumphof) is a 5 ha estate run by Markus Prackwieser. His Praesulis line of wines are especially coveted as they come from his finest plots which are pergola or trellis trained well over 1000 feet in elevation.

Staff Pick Notes

Though I tend to gravitate towards more indigenous varietals, I have found myself really liking this Italian Sauvugnon Blanc. While the idea of tearing out Nebbiolo to plant Cab in the heart of Barolo is a crime against humanity, Italians have been cultivating French varietals and vice versa for centuries. The view from the terraced vineyards in the Italian Alps are stunning and perfect for growing grapes. Fierce sun exposure in the day and crisp cool mountain nights give this wine and all I have tasted from Gump, bright ripe fruit balanced by tangy minerality and lip smacking acidity. Yum! One word of advise: Don't drink this too cold.

Trentino-Alto Adige

Crossing the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, Trentino-Alto-Adige is in fact comprised of two autonomous regions (Trentino and Alto-Adige). The swath of land was returned to Italy after World War I, and the two regions have been lumped together in the winemaking world ever since. Alto-Adige, the northernmost half of the region, retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. The region is most famous for its...

Alto Adige

Comprising the northern half of the oft-conjoined Trentino/Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy, Alto-Adige is in fact its own entity with its own distinct style of winemaking. Situated on the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, the two autonomous regions were returned to Italy after World War I (hence why they are often lumped together). Alto-Adige retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. Alto-Adige is most...

Sauvignon Blanc

Few varietals have spawned as bizarre a list of descriptors as Sauvignon Blanc. Believe it or not, “cat pee” is in fact a complimentary tasting note, associated with some of the best bottlings. (It’s a somewhat odd way of pointing out herbaceousness in the wine.) Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...
