Langhe "Grign" Grignolino, Cavallotto - 2022

Item # 37137 750mL

Forget about the Barolos from Cavallotto as you already know they're great. However, what really gets us going is his Grignolino, entirely unoaked, from high elevation old vineyards, and just as charming as they come with lithe red berried and floral fruit and a delicate yet tense dose of tannins that's so common for the small berried grape.

Staff Pick Notes

Are you browsing the shelves for something that is just down right enjoyable. The kind of wine that could go head to head with mac & cheese and mash potatoes as a comfort food main stay. This bottle is just that. Comfort in a bottle. Medium body with a pinch of spice. A hardy meal is not required but this Langhe Grignolino would thrive next to a bowl of home made chili or even a beef stew (but who has time for that.... Campbells Beef and Barley would hit the spot as well.) Grignolino doesn't have the name recognition as Barbera or Dolcetto but it has just as much elegance and class.

Glossary

Piedmont

The most famous grape in Piedmont is the noble Nebbiolo, which makes the long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco. There are plenty of Nebbiolo-based wines that are quite enjoyable in their youth, however, often produced in smaller, lesser-known regions such as Ghemme or Gattinara. Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive notes of strawberry, cherry, and pink peppercorn. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...

Grignolino

The Grignolino grape derives its name from grignole, meaning "pips." This small-berried red variety makes some truly intriguing wines, because the grapes produce very little juice in proportion to the amount of pips and skins. These elements, combined in these proportions, yield deliciously earthy wines that are pale in color (often resembling Beaujolais), and unexpectedly tannic.

Cava

Dry, delicious Cava is an excellent Champagne alternative. The best examples are aged on the lees (the spent yeast cells used in fermentation) and show complexity to rival that of the best Champagnes.
