Trebbiano Spoletino "Farandola", Di Filippo - 2022

Item # 37263 750mL

One of the rare white wines you'll find in the landlocked state of Umbria smack dab in the middle of Italy. Trebbiano Spoletino is a unique variety local to Umbria and gives more body than other Trebbiano wines you may have tasted. This is lush, unoaked and is grown on clay and chalk-based soils. A fine match with monkfish, lobster or rich fish dishes. Or, will work with soft and hard, aged cheeses.

Staff Pick Notes

Trebbiano has earned a mixed-bag reputation over its long lifetime. Sure, it often is made into simple wines, but there's reason this grape has staying power--whether in your table wine or a fine distilled spirit. From the biodynamic vineyards of Di Filippo you have a wine with aromatic complexity and a deliciousness quotient to make you smile. Roberto Di Filippo, the estate's grower extraordinaire himself, will tell you this wine needs some time to open up once you pop the cork. Citrusy peach notes pleasantly greet the nose. The clay and limestone soils in which these Trebbiano grapes grow helps to give a tingling minerality on the palate and persistent acidity, which in wine-speak is what helps the wine taste fresh and clean. After the crucial airing-out period, I get further notes of cypress leaves and gentle salinity.

Responsible for the eponymous Sagrantino di Montefalco as well as being a component of Rosso di Montefalco, Sagrantino has the power and structure of the biggest wines in Italy, yet still shows opulent fruit redolent of mixed wild berries. The Rosso...
