Priorat "Clos Fontà," Mas d'en Gil - 2016

Item # 44611 750mL

The top wine from Mas d'en Gil akin to a Grand Cru in all ways. This comes from select, old plots of vines planted in black slate and quartz-based soils. This is aged for three years in cask before release and shows the sophisticated side of Priorat wines. The aging regimen has helped the wine evolve, yet it's still showing plenty of signs of life, and could easily be stored another decade plus.

Staff Pick Notes

Geographical features and climatic conditions combine with old vines in a relationship that creates depth, finesse and power for the wines of Priorat. The growers and wine makers of the region know of this intimately. First the slate soils creates a challenge for the roots, forcing them to dig deep. This allows for the vines to have at their disposal water when the dry, sunny climate. The vines for the "Clos Fontà" are up to 100 years old, giving immense character and typicity. These aromas are focused, dense blackberry, cassis and floral hints. Silky and palate coating, rich yet vibrant. Please bring on the braised short rib or dry aged, umami driven precious cut of beef!

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Grenache

The Grenache grape (a.k.a. Grenache Noir) produces relatively pale, fruity red wines that often stop just short of sweetness. Grenache is familiar to most wine drinkers as an ingredient in the blends of the Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon, where it can add charm to varieties that are a little rougher around the edges. The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...

Priorato

Priorat is the precocious new kid on the Spanish wine scene. Twenty years ago, this tiny Northwestern winemaking region was all but forgotten. Then, after a handful of winemaking mavericks moved into the area, Priorat began to produce some of the most powerful, complex, and expensive wines on the market. In 2003, Priorat was awarded the prestigious D.O.C. status - a term previously held only by Rioja - and prices and quality levels have continued to soar ever since. Garnacha (called...

Carignan

Grown all over Europe and the Americas, Carignan (a.k.a. Carignane, Carignano, and Cariñena) is seldom seen as a 100% varietal wine. Many appellations of Languedoc-Roussillon must include a certain percentage of Carignan, but it is rarely the dominant grape in these blends. For years, this naturally high-yielding grape suffered from overproduction, but New World winemakers have lately taken up the Carignan cause and produced some distinctive and delicious examples. Now that it is subject to...
