Cocchi Barolo Chinato

Item # 24568 500mL

This Chinato is produced from the world famous Piemonte wine, Barolo, which is infused with quinine bark, rhubarb, and ginger. The aroma is filled with melon, orange rind and rhubarb. Gently spiced, the acidity made me hungry for antipasti and, while traditionally, this is enjoyed after a meal, I have no problem enjoying before or during one.

Staff Pick Notes

There's always something new to learn about wine and spirits. The info may come from the producer or wholesaler, but sometimes great ideas come from our customers as well. If you love Barolo Chinato as much as I do, then try using it as a cocktail staple instead of a digestivo. One of our customers told me recently that he subs Chinato for vermouth in a Manhattan. What a brilliant idea! Want to punch up an Americano? The quinine, citrus and ginger in Cocchi's version will do the trick. Chinato straddles the void between vermouth and amaro, slightly more bitter and herbacious than the former, but not as medicinal as the latter. It's specifically from Piemonte and always made from Nebbiolo, so it won't keep indefinitely. You might as well have fun experimenting with it!

Piedmont

The most famous grape in Piedmont is the noble Nebbiolo, which makes the long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco. There are plenty of Nebbiolo-based wines that are quite enjoyable in their youth, however, often produced in smaller, lesser-known regions such as Ghemme or Gattinara. Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive notes of strawberry, cherry, and pink peppercorn. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...
