Tasting Notes

Dubbed by the brand as the "Rarest of Speyside," and in many ways it is. Not only have any malt bottlings, whether direct from the distillery or from independent merchants, been virtually non-existent for this distilleries 100-plus-year history, but, in recent years, many Speyside producers have moved further and further away from the classic Speyside style that Aultmore retains proudly in spades. One of the most impressive whiskies of the year, this whisky transforms with some time to air out in the glass and generously rewards the patient imbiber. Notes include pecan pie, marmalade, fresh-peeled orange, Granny Smith apple, coconut cake, vanilla custard, toasted malt, heather, and banana cream.

Looking to expand your Scotch experience with very high quality, lesser known Scotch? The Aultmore 18 is my spirits discovery of this season. Meyer lemon, fresh cream, savory spices, orange peel are some of the wonderful aromas revealed in this unheralded brand. Point of reference: Aultmore whiskies are a key component in the higher end Dewar's bottlings. Not to be lumped in with Dewar's, this single malt stands out on its own for its complexity, freshness, and warm, inviting tones. It evolved in my glass over the course of an hour and will continue to do so in bottle upon opening. Seriously good Scotch at this price.
