You could argue that Kilkerran in the single malt that saved Campbeltown. Facing the possibility of revoking their status as a Scotch Whisky region, the Mitchell family of Springbank reopened the historic Glengyle distillery next door in 2004 and have been releasing sneak peaks of the great whiskies to come, dubbed "Works in Progress." All that has lead us to the highly anticipated release of this new 12 year single malt benchmark. Supplies remain limited for now but if you want to know what makes Scotch Whisky great, this is a perfect place to start. Notes include ripe orchard fruit flavors laced with sweet spices, punchy oak vanilla and a wisp of peat.

If you want to test a chef’s skills, ask them to cook an egg. It’s a seemingly simple task yet the end result will show their true quality. If you want to test a distillery, ask them to produce a 12 year old whisky. Most distilleries can readily satisfy this request, but how is the quality of the final product? For the recently reopened distillery, Glengyle, the Kilkerran 12 year old is the equivalent of a perfectly poached egg. This whisky roars with aroma and flavor yet remains finely balanced. Rich fruits, smoked meat, creamy malt, and fresh vanilla. Let the whisky sit and breathe in the glass. It will show its breadth and depth of complexity. If a chef can’t properly cook an egg get them out of the kitchen.

History:Distillation was brought to Scotland from Ireland by missionary monks in the 6th century. In 1644, the first taxes were imposed on Scottish distillers by England, with the result that most of the nation’s whisky was soon distilled illicitly. With the Parliament’s passing of the “Excise Act” in 1824, licensing fees for distilleries were much cheaper.
