Montsant, Capçanes "Peraj Petita", Kosher - 2022

Item # 19632 750mL

A unique blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, and Tempranillo. This full-bodied wine has chewy tannins and a strong, leathery, rustic spine with traces of eucalyptus aromas. Although modern in style, the earthy scents, and creamy finish are typical of Spanish wine. Although not originally a Kosher wine-producing facility, in 1995 the Jewish community of Barcelona asked Capçanes if they could produce a kosher wine. This demanded the installation of new equipment allowing the winemakers to identify, isolate, and vinify under controlled “Lo Mevushal” conditions small parcels of high quality fruit. The result is undeniably some of the highest quality kosher reds coming from Spain. Kosher for Passover.

Staff Pick Notes

Tucked away in the hills behind Tarragona lies the small village of Capçanes. Although viticulture here dates to the 13th century, in 1933 five local families banded together to form the coop Celler de Capçanes, and together they've kept their winemaking traditions alive. Kosher since 1995, the winery operates under the supervision of the Orthodox Union. Made from a blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, and Tempranillo (some from very old vines) this wine comes in both mevushal and non-mevushal versions (see back label). Both are fantastic, with the non-mevushal showing bright cranberry and earthiness and the mevushal more dark fruit and soft plums. As there is some sediment, decanting is recommended.

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Grenache

The Grenache grape (a.k.a. Grenache Noir) produces relatively pale, fruity red wines that often stop just short of sweetness. Grenache is familiar to most wine drinkers as an ingredient in the blends of the Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon, where it can add charm to varieties that are a little rougher around the edges. The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...

Tempranillo

A.k.a. Cencibel. Just about synonymous with Spanish wine, the red Tempranillo grape has now fully won over the hearts and minds of critics and amateur oenophiles all over the world. The best bottles are powerful and ageworthy, and are beginning to fetch prices you'd never have expected from Spanish wines just a few years ago. Tempranillo is often used in blends with Bordeaux grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and has lately been grown with considerable success outside of Spain, in...
