Primitivo Quiles "Raspay" Tinto - 2016

Item # 22203 750mL

Made from low-yielding 100% Monastrell grapes grown in this exceptional winemaking region. It is produced in small quantities using traditional techniques before being aged in old oak barrels and then, for a longer period, in bottle. A dark, intense wine in an oxidized style, so it's not for everyone, but an amazing experience, reminiscent of Chinato.

Staff Pick Notes

This has been one of my favorite Spanish wines for many years! In fact, it is not made every year. The Quiles family only makes this wine in excellent vintages. It hails from the oldest bodega in the Alicante region and perfectly expresses the terroir of limestone rich soil and a hot, dry climate regulated by a mild, Mediterranean breeze. On the nose, you'll observe right away that this is an earthy wine, with notes of leather and tobacco up front. Just below, you'll also discover black olive, fig, dried red cherry and a signature touch of (intentional) oxidation, giving the wine a slightly tawny character. The savory character of the Raspay lends itself to many pairings, but braised meats and assertive cheeses come to mind first. Take a chance on this wine. It is a one of a kind!

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Alicante

The picturesque city of Alicante in the Valencia region of Spain has a vibrant tourism industry - which makes it all the more surprising that its wines are so little known outside of Spain. The region, lying on the southeastern border, produces a great variety of wines - from light and fruity whites to oak-aged Cabernet. It can also claim some of the best Moscatels in the country, as well as a unique rancio wine made from sun-dried Monastrell grapes called Fondillon.

Monastrell

A Spanish synonym for the dark-skinned Mourvèdre grape.
