Legend has it that Emperor Frederick Barbarossa developed a taste for inky Lacrima wines after capturing the castle di Morro d'Alba in 1167. Perhaps this is how he earned his moniker 'Red Beard?' Despite being an ancient grape, Lacrima di Morro d'Alba is a relatively new appellation as winemakers have sought to revive and popularize indigenous grapes. This lends itself to great value. I really enjoy aromatic reds - the more perfumey the better. Lacrima always delivers. These wines are ripe and juicy, with 'lacrima' meaning tear in Italian for the grape's tendency to burst and tear on the vine. There is a redolent bouquet of roses and violets on the nose followed by bracing acidity on the attack. Soft tannins reinforce ripe black fruit and fresh tomatoes on the palate. Let it open up a little bit and serve with easy Italian fare.
