Cheverny Rouge, Hervé Villemade - 2022

Item # 26806 750mL

Hervé Villemade's vineyards are located on the border of the Sologne woods in the western Loire valley. He is a master of Cheverny; his wines easily express the dense soils of his region. This clear blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir gives strong raspberry and kirsch notes all struck with a distinct earthy note and lots of foresty undergrowth. Evolving in the glass and opening easily, this natural wine is just a joy to drink. Serve it with herbed goat cheese and grilled poultry, or enjoy it on its own! Villemade ferments and matures his wines in large wooden vats. This wine was bottled with minimal sulfur.

Staff Pick Notes

Light and elegant--it’s almost like this wine was made for occasions when you “should” be drinking white but you really want red. For the 2013 vintage, Villemade blends together 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Gamay from young and old vines (between seven and 35 years) in the Loire Valley to make a sophisticated and unique wine with soft, silky tannins that recalls some of the characteristics of the delicate cold-weather reds from the Jura. On the palate: a nice concentration of fresh red cherries, touches of licorice, and soft acidity and smoke on the finish. Pair it with roasted chicken, flavorful fish, or even grilled meats.

About the Producer

Cheverny, Loire Valley, France Domaine du Moulin has always been a family estate. The grandparents of the current generation’s producer, Hervé Villemade founded the modes estate and he took over in 1995. The domain used to be a polyculture farm and in the spirit of the age, the old vines of the 1960s were pulled up and replaced in the 1970s. Hervé made some changes when he took over: he...

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.
