Tasting Notes

We’ve appreciated Pierde Almas’ artisanal and unique distillates. So when our spirits buyer Nima Ansari had the opportunity to collaborate directly with them, he seized it. This 100% Lumbre mezcal, made from this rare species previously seen only in miniscule amounts blended with other agaves, is the result. It's the first of its kind. Proprietor Jonathan Barbieri describes “its liquid form” as “clean, pristine, beautiful, and expansive on the palate." Enjoy.

Staff Pick Notes

Allow me to geek out for a moment. Most of the mezcals we see on the market are from a species of agave called Espadin. It's kind of a baseline for mezcal: They look like what most of us expect, have a relatively short maturation, are easily cultivated, and, in the right hands, make delicious mezcal! Then there are the other guys! There are around 36 different species of agave permitted to be used in mezcal, most of which only grow wild, giving a range of possibilities similar to that of fine wine. Lumbre is a type of Karwinskii, which is a specific genus of agave that is known for its unique flavor and aromatic characteristics. They grow tall like a palm tree (instead of spherical) and the leaves grow out from "trunk." This bottle represents a rare, small batch release from Pierde Almas. We loved it so much we bought the entire batch!
