Tasting Notes

The wine comes from the high-altitude wine region east of Madrid where Victor de la Serna's own wine operation Finca Sandoval is based. The young winemaker Juan Antonio Ponce is passionate to produce wines from native varieties. This is his white from Albillo grape from cool-sited vineyards. Very elegant and refined with green apple, stone fruits, green tea, chamomile, spices, and limestony minerality. Multi-layered with a great length.

I like making experiments in food friendly, versatile, year-round drinkable wines. The latest trial consisted of two wines and two meals. Luckily I found two winners! Winner #1 Albillo, a Spanish grape found in an area much better known for its red wines, offers great crossover appeal for lovers of Chablis or Assyrtiko. The acidity definitely packs a zippy punch and makes a great match with shellfish or oysters. On a cold winter’s night the weight of this wine works well with pork chops, couscous and cauliflower. At the same time it made me long for al fresco dining in warmer months and grilled chicken with citrus or octopus salad. If you like biodynamic wines or high-acid whites, this should be on your radar!
