Tasting Notes

Patrick Piuze creates Chablis worthy of admiration. His Bougros carries leesy weight, with powdery minerals dusted atop a firm texture. The flavors are honeyed, quietly brooding with buckets of Mirabelle plums on the palate. An unctuous finish closes the experience, making this wine extremely memorable. Chablis is meant for a meal. Suggested options are any roasted bird and rich buttery gravy or creamy west coast oysters or other firm seafood, like lobster, cod, and halibut. Alternatively, it will cellar for many years. Piuze's Bougros is fermented and aged in six-year-old barrels and the vineyards are 39-years-old. They are situated on a steep, south-facing slope that reveals bluish gray clay.

You may have noticed that we carry quite a few wines from Patrick Piuze. We're big fans, and not at all shy about showing our affection. How could we not? He's a winemaker obsessed with terroir, whose sole mission is to craft wines that express the true nature of Chablis. Although he's a native of Montreal he's built up trust among his vineyard cohorts and is able to secure particular parcels of old vines in Grand Cru vineyards. Bougros sits close to the river and thus has a bit more clay in the soil. The vines are planted on steep slopes with SW exposure meaning riper fuller wines. The 2015 vintage itself was warm and there's plenty of sunshine in this wine. It's plush, dense, and layered with citrus, lemon curd and wet stone all balance by plenty of racy acidity. An exemplary bottle from this Grand Cru site.
