Grape Variety

Tasting Notes

The Amalfi coast is a destination wonderland located south of Naples in the region of Campania. The San Francesco winery is cultivating the little-known, local red grape called Tintore which has a vibrant expression of red and dark-berried fruits, a tannic backbone and lively acidity. The Tintore vines are pre-phylloxera. The old vines have rigor but more than anything, give a concentration that is unparalleled. The San Francesco winery has a mere 4 ha of vines, all of which are dedicated to the preservation of ancient varieties native to their area which is known as the "green" Amalfi due to the wild nature of the area.

Staff Pick Notes

Wow! You don't see pre-phylloxera own rooted vine much in Southern Italy or any where in Europe. But that little louse the devasted European wine production over a century ago never made it to this secluded valley near the Amalfi coast in Campania. The grape here is Tintore an indigenous varietal. The 4 hectare vineyards are terraced, southeast facing and grown on limestone and dolomite with volcanic pyroclastics (pumice) soils. The resulting wine is deep and dark, a bit brooding, with a mix a power and finesse that is wonderful. I heard that this winery has a bed & breakfast in the same building overlooking the vineyards. I want to go to there!
