Rezpiral Espadin de San Baltazar Mezcal

Item # 37776 750mL
$61.96/ Single Bottle
$743.52/ Case of 12

Tasting Notes

The agave spirits of Rezpiral represent some of the highest standards in the world of spirits today. Select batches are sourced and bottled in tiny quantities from artisanal producers throughout Mexico with a preference towards tradition and outstanding quality. This espadin based mezcal was made by master mezcalero Aureliano Hernandez Martinez in the village of San Baltazar Guelavila. The plants grew at an altitude of over 5,000 feet and matured for over ten years before harvest, nearly twice as long as most conventional espadins. The notes on this mezcal are incredibly pure and transparent with the terroir really shining through showing off notes of mineral, white pepper, lime blossom, lemongrass, honeydew and a touch of mesquite.

Staff Pick Notes

For reasons I do not have room to discuss in a staff pick, this stuff can't be called mezcal. "Distillato de agave" is what the label says, and to me that says value. It's declassified from the mezcal name, a situation that evokes secret truth-revealing documents. Would you believe this spirit does the same? This will probably show you more about the mezcal than any other bottle at this price. Now for some specs: espadin agave grown at high altitude for 10 years is the raw material, it's a starting point that could command $100/bottle elsewhere. Small batch size indicates careful processing; and the packaging is nice, so you can gift or display to your heart's desire. On the experience, a smoky nose leads to wonderful concentration on the palate. Powerful, sweet, full, and dense. I strongly recommend.
