Lagrein: It rhymes with wine! We all know about the fantastic white wines from Northeastern Italy (Hello, Pinot Grigio) but what about the reds from the tiny corner that used to be part of Austria? Trentino-Alto Adige only became part of Italy in 1919, but the Benedictine monks at Muri-Gries have been there since 1845. They brought with them a sophisticated approach to winemaking from Switzerland and started making awesome wines from the local grape, Lagrein. It's a cousin of Syrah, producing a complex and classy wine with notes of dark berries and rose petals, as well as a hint of spice and a subtle earthiness. This is a full-bodied, yet elegant and very drinkable wine that is perfect for any and every day.
