Amarone, Le Ragose - 2015

Item # 47719 750mL

A full-bodied red wine with exquisite texture. This is made from a blend of classic grapes in the area and was fermented with indigenous yeasts. Would make an excellent foil with Risotto all'Amarone.

Staff Pick Notes

The La Ragose vineyard stood abandoned for years atop the highest, steepest point of Valpolicella's DOC. Local winemakers had moved on to lower areas searching for terrain requiring a little less struggle. It wasn't until 1969 when Arnaldo and Marta Galli saw the potential for this 40-acre plot, and invigorated its truly spectacular potential. I had the opportunity to enjoy this wine opposite my father as we devoured my mother's chicken cacciatore - a beautiful pairing. The layering of flavor is breathtaking as it opens with lush red fruit, and racy acid, carrying over to a finish of concentrated raisin and dried fig. The depth and complexity of this particular wine reflects the struggle of the grapes themselves, but also the determination of the wine makers. As they say, whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Glossary

Corvina

The red Corvina grape (a.k.a. Corvina Veronese) is the most widely planted grape in Italy's Valpolicella and Bardolino regions. In recent years, it has gained momentum as the best grape for making Amarone.

Veneto

Valpolicella

This is a very large region that produces all sorts of red wines, often from the Corvina grape, that range from light, early-drinking, Beaujolais-esque efforts to hulking dried-grape monsters like Recioto and Amarone.
