The Astor Wines & Spirits Glossary

Victoria

The state of Victoria, adjacent to and southeast of South Australia, is Australia’s third-largest producer of wine. Climatically very varied (its higher-altitude vineyards are the coolest in Australia), Victoria is home to the most diverse assortment of vineyards in Australia, with a particular focus on cooler-climate varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Shiraz production tends to be concentrated in the central viticultural regions of Grampians, Pyrenees, and Heathcote, where the climate is such that Shiraz grapes regularly achieve perfect ripeness. While these three adjacent areas each produce distinctive Shiraz, they tend to be a bridge style between the bolder, more opulent wines of South Australia and the meaty, gamey wines of New South Wales. In general, wines from Victoria are elegant and well-structured.
