Kurni, Oasi degli Angeli

Kurni, Oasi degli Angeli - 2017

Item # 10563 750mL

Kurni comes primarily from a 95-year-old plot of Montepulciano that the Casolanetti family has farmed for generations. Densely planted and high above the nearby sea, these natural and healthy vines produce incredibly intense and complex fruit. As Marco uses no additions whatsoever during the vinification of his wines (he only uses small bits of sulphur just before bottling), his practices are peculiar yet remarkable. This wine was aged in 200% new oak - after the primary fermentation in new oak, the wine is later racked into new barrels for further aging and to aerate the Montepulciano. The dry extract on this wine is off the charts meaning the tannic structure of this wine is palpable.

Red wines are produced here as well, with Sangiovese being the dominant red grape in the region. When blended with the local Montepulciano, it makes a wine called Rosso Piceno (mostly sangiovese) or Rosso Conero...

Montepulciano

This rugged red staple can be anything from a simply fruited, easy-drinking wine to a serious, more structured offering, complete with all the depth and earthiness that can come from old-vine fruit and ideally placed vineyards. Montepulciano d'Abruzzi is produced in the region of Abruzzi from the Montepulciano grape, and is not to be confused with Tuscany’s Sangiovese-based Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Many of the modern incarnations of Abruzzi’s favorite red wine are bigger, more structured,...
