Staff Pick Notes

"When life gives you lemons..." is one of the oldest of old tropes, but it's truly fitting for Claire Naudin's new cuvée, "Galanthus Nivalis." It's the name of a lovely white flower, but also translates to "snowdrop," a fitting term considering how this unique Pinot Blanc came about. In 2016, Burgundy was hit with a wicked frost, which knocked out all of Naudin's Chardonnay grapes. That's when she turned to this tiny, 0.43 ha plot of Pinot Blanc and made her metaphorical lemonade. As always, her magical touch is on full display. You'll find gorgeous aromas of citrus, cream, and the faintest whisper of oak. Although the wine is aged in neutral barrels, its presence is nonetheless there, though subtle. It's a wine of substance and depth but with an electrifying acidity that makes it feel fresh and alive. A fluke of nature at its best.
