Hilberg "Vareij," Pasquero - 2020

Item # 20217 750mL

An aromatic red wine made from a blend of Brachetto and Barbera. This tastes like freshly macerated raspberries, with a touch of geranium and red currant. Crisp and fresh on the palate, this is a great food wine that marries well with salami and other cured meats.

Staff Pick Notes

The Pasquero family owns a farm where they've made this wine since the beginning of the 20th century. They used to produce other crops out of necessity, and today, Clementina is in charge of the property and overviews the work of her son Michelangelo who, with his wife Annette, still works on crops such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and more. Wine production, though, is becoming the most important part of their business. This wine is a blend of Bracchetto and Barbera. Bracchetto provides floral flavors while Barbera offers body and a longer finish. It's very aromatic and the palate is smooth and full of red fruit flavors. A medium-bodied red wine that could pair well with cheese or cold cuts.

Wherever they fall on the spectrum of stodginess, however, they are generally ruby-colored, full-bodied, and highly acidic, with remarkably low levels of tannins. The areas that are most strongly associated with Barbera (for good reason) are the Alba and Asti DOCs, which consistently produce...
