Taurasi, Cantine Lonardo - 2016

Item # 22797 750mL

Taurasi is made predominantly from the Aglianico grape, which is said to have its roots in the hillside vineyards of Taurasi since the time of the Roman Empire in 80 BC. Some authorities also think it was actual the first varietal brought to Italy by the ancient Greeks. This wine shows lots of dark fruit and violet floral with a bit of minerals and rustic notes on the end.

Staff Pick Notes

Cantine Lonardo Taurasi is a wine made primarily from the Aglianico grape, although up to 15% of other named grapes may be blended in. It is akin to an Amarone (Corvina), Brunello (Sangiovese), or Barolo (Nebbiolo) because it is a top-of-the-line use of the Aglianico grape. It is required to be aged for a minimum of three years, including one year in wood. This one has matured well and has a deep ruby color and a lot of luscious red berry and plum notes; it's made for a really big meat dish and other big, rich sauced foods. The only thing about this vintage that might detract is that the weather caused a very ripe crop and the alcohol level exceeds the desired 12.5%. That may cause it to last for fewer than 20 years. But right now it is such a delicious food wine for that special occasions that you don't want to miss it.
