Pinot Noir "Yarra Valley", Mac Forbes - 2021

Item # 23912 750mL

This wine is where New World meets Old World. Winemaker Mac Forbes has worked hard to create a wine with elegance and balance while using a more natural approach, such as using indigenous yeasts and leaving his wines unfiltered. This Pinot is all-around delicate with ripe red cherries on the nose and palate; it exudes Old World elegance.

Staff Pick Notes

Mac Forbes is among the new generation of winemakers from the Yarra Valley. Yarra enjoys a cool climate not unlike that of Burgundy. It's here where vignerons diverged from the overly extracted fruit bombs from Barossa. Forbes practices the natural mantra that great wine is farmed in the vineyard, not concocted in the cellar. He even has an EB (experimental batch) line that highlights a single row of a vineyard, with the idea that terroir differs even within the vineyard. This Pinot Noir is for those (like me) who prefer their reds light, juicy, and chillable. In addition, you’ll find notes of fresh red berries, minerals, cloves, and chamomile. It may take a moment to swallow your swig, as it is a true joy to swirl in your mouth.

Glossary

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Australia

Australian Shiraz (made from the grape called “Syrah” in other parts of the world) shows the essence of the outback: it’s big, bold, and a little rough around the edges. The vast country leaves lots of room for variation, however, with its many terroirs each yielding distinctively styled wines. The climate of South Australia’s McLaren Vale district is heavily influenced by the ocean; wines here typically show savory notes of olive and spice on the nose and deep berry flavors on the palate....

Victoria

The state of Victoria, adjacent to and southeast of South Australia, is Australia’s third-largest producer of wine. Climatically very varied (its higher-altitude vineyards are the coolest in Australia), Victoria is home to the most diverse assortment of vineyards in Australia, with a particular focus on cooler-climate varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Shiraz production tends to be concentrated in the central viticultural regions of Grampians, Pyrenees, and Heathcote, where the...
