Saumur Rouge, Réserve des Vignerons - 2018

Item # 24114 750mL

A deep, dark red wine, packed with blackberry fruit and showing a rustic, funky edge. Surprisingly hearty, this Loire Valley red has a solid backbone of tannins and stands up well to grilled or roasted meats.

Staff Pick Notes

This wine has my vote for best bottle under $10. Cabernet Franc is one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon, though it tends to be more tangy than its celebrity offspring. A grape with connections to both the Loire and Bordeaux, I propose that this grape has the ability to bridge the gap between all wine drinkers. There’s enough fruit to please the New World wine fans and none of the green flavor many object to. Then again, there’s a hint of tannin with zippy acidity and that classic Cabernet Franc perfume, which is sure to please any serious wine fan. Grab a few bottles for your next gathering or just to have around. This red is juicy enough not to require food, but since you’re going to have to eat at some point, you could pair this prodigiously with meat and vegetable dishes that have tomato or peppers.

As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Saumur

Excavations left from building castles and palaces resulted in a network of hundreds of miles of underground tunnels, which local vintners have taken advantage of as ready-made wine cellars! ...

Cabernet Franc has remained close to its roots in France, enjoying small pockets of popularity primarily in the Loire Valley (specifically in Chinon), where it is often bottled as a varietal wine, and in Bordeaux where it is still used in moderate percentages in the typical blends. In fact,...
