Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine “Clos de Briords”, Dom. de la Pepière - 2022

Item # 25275 750mL

An old-vines cuvee of Muscadet from a single plot vineyard planted in schist. The Clos des Briords' deep clay / schist soil over granite has excellent drainage, which means Ollivier's precious 70+ year old vines never sit with wet feet. Ollivier allows longer hang-time before harvest for optimal maturity - all this attention concentrates the fruit creating a more powerful Muscadet (though that sounds like an oxymoron.) the Clos is very mineral-driven and quite austere in its youth, rather than fruity and light. Over a few months, or even years, if one can wait for it, it develops much complexity in aromatics and structure.

Staff Pick Notes

"Muscadet de Sevre et Maine" refers to the region's best appellation, between the rivers Sevre and Maine, and "sur Lie" indicates the wine has been left on the Lies. Sur Lie a traditional wine making technique which sadly is becoming a rarity as wine makers try to rush production to get their wines out earlier & earlier. An excellent example of this wine with a nose of Lemon, Lime and steel. The palate, which has a slightly bubbly feel starts with an awesome high acid citrus zip which is perfectly balanced against the wonderfully clean dry fruity finish. This is the perfect companion to fish and especially I'm thinking a plate of a dozen oysters. It would also be a great aperitif. Whether your new to Muscadet or an old hat, I know you will love this wine. Cheers !

Glossary

Melon de Bourgogne

Muscadet

The coolest (temperature-wise) of the Loire Valley appellations, this region is most famous for its bracingly dry, seafood-friendly whites. Made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape (virtually unheard of in the rest of the world), these refreshing wines are idyllic partners for oysters or mussels.

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.
