Tasting Notes

This release from NY Distilling Co. is a homage to M.C. Perry, the commandant of the Brooklyn Navy Yard circa 1941, and is the first "Navy Strength" gin available in the USA. Its sweet palate entry (due to a bit of wildflower honey from upstate) belies its 57% ABV. Juniper, citrus & cinnamon follow through on the mid-palate before giving way to a slow alcohol burn. Very mixable gin, try it in a gimlet. Botanicals are juniper, orange, lemon, grapefruit, coriander, angelica, cinnamon, anise, cardomom and wildflower honey from upstate NY. Corn spirit base.

Staff Pick Notes

In my opinion, every season is gin and tonic season! Perry's Tot makes the absolute best gin and tonic (or "Tot and Tonic" if you will). This gin is a "Navy Strength" which means it sits at a higher proof. The higher alcohol content really allows the juniper to shine through any gin based cocktail. But why is it called Navy Strength? For starters, the Gin Gimlet was first invented to help ward off scurvy on Naval vessels. That being said, there was a lot of gin being stored on these boats. Because of where the gin was stored, it would sometimes spill out onto gunpowder that was close by. It was later discovered that gun powder that was wet from gin that was higher proof would still catch fire, hence the name Navy Strength.

Lake Erie is still dominated by bulk production for grape juice, though a few small, serious wineries are beginning to crop up. Long Island’s maritime climate...
