Côte du Forez is a new appellation in the eastern Loire, located in the Auvergne. Though the official recognition has only been since 2000, winemaking has been a tradition since 900 AD. Verdier-Logel's "Volcanique," named for the volcanic soils of the region, is 100% Gamay. Fresh and lean, with bold cherries, scrumptious acidity, and dark minerals, this is easy, quaffing wine. Light on its feet and great with roast chicken breast or bacon and sautéed winter greens.

There is a region in central France that is technically part of the Loire Valley but intertwines elements of the Rhône an Beaujolais to create distinctive, terroir-specific Gamay: Côtes du Forez. The appellation contains a fascinating assortment of ancient volcanic mountain foothills. It didn’t receive its official AOC appellation status until 2000, yet Odile Verdier and her husband Jacky Logel arrived at the Domaine in 1992 beginning their mission to produce world class Gamay out of the local granitic soils. Domaine Verdier-Logel is now a leading estate in the region, and their ‘La Volcanique’ bottling showcases the local Gamay clone of the region known as the Saint Romain clone. It produces smaller berries than Beaujolais and is a bit more peppery. With a slight chill, this is my ideal red to drink during the warmer days!
