Tasting Notes

Gemischter Satz is a field blend, originating around Vienna, it is literally a Viennese field blend. Most Gemischter Satz come from old vines planted after WWII to hedge bets against disease.

Staff Pick Notes

My hometown touts itself as the Carousel Capital of the World. I have ridden the Carousel Circuit and have the official button to prove it. What does this have to do with Viennese wine? If you're drinking this Ringelspiel, then absolutely everything. The more the merrier would be my description of this traditional Viennese field blend. A real merry-go-round of a tipple. Composed of many different grape varieties, this wine is really singing. It is an old plot and at least a few of them are unknown even to the winemaker. This is both exceptionally delicious and easy-drinking, yet interesting and very well made. Jutta Ambrositsch left her job in graphic design to pursue winemaking, which should come as no surprise looking at this stellar label, She's a dynamic dame!

These vineyards are home to the now famous Viennese Gemischter Satz (Viennese Field Blends, meaning “mixed set”) which, in an effort to preserve the city's cultural heritage, have therefore been recognized by Slow Food as an Ark of Taste and a Presidia...

Grüner Veltliner

Referred to by many Americans as "Gru-Ve," this white variety is nearly synonymous with Austrian wine. The wines are consistent and eminently drinkable at the low end, and, on the premium side of things, full-bodied,...

Riesling

Though the trend is now in the other direction, for many years Riesling was known for producing wines with little alcohol and some residual sugar - too sweet for many modern wine drinkers. Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the...
